Audition for the 2026-2027 Company
VIRTUAL INTEREST MEETING
We invite you to join Artistic Director, Emily Shoemaker, for a pre-audition interest meeting where you will be able to learn more about the commitment, expectations, benefits, and experience of NCYTE. Everyone is welcome to attend, even if you are not sure if you want to audition. Learn more about the company and the opportunities it provides. We encourage dancers and parents to attend and if you are unable to please contact Emily Shoemaker.
2 Options to Join:
Thursday, August 6th. 6:00pm - 7:00pm.
Sunday, August 16th. 2:00pm - 3:00pm.
WHAT TO EXPECT
Auditions will start promptly, please be early and warmed up, the studio will be open at 12:30pm.
Once you arrive, you will check in upstairs, outside of Studio C and receive a nametag. The audition will consist of technique, across the floor, improvisation, and a short combination. We ask that you learn as much as you can, but just relax and have fun! You will break up into smaller groups to perform the combination for our panel. Smile, perform, enjoy yourself! It's ok if you mess up - we understand. It's not about more than your technique, we want to see how well you work with others learning the material and are able to perform.
Company members are required to re-audition each year and our graduated seniors will be present to help assist with auditions. There will be lots of friendly faces and other dancers to ask questions if you need help.
AUDITION BY SUBMISSION: In person auditions are always preferred, but if you cannot attend in person auditions you are still welcome to submit. Please fill out the audition submission form and we will be in touch. Virtual submissions will be required to submit additional videos showing a range of technique, a stage performance (solo or group), and at least one minute of improv (music of your choice or a capella).
WHEN WILL YOU HEAR
Everyone who auditions will receive feedback and a decision by Monday, August 24th, at 5:00pm.
WHY JOIN NCYTE
ADDITIONAL TRAINING: Company class and rehearsals offer 3 more hours of tap training to supplement your growth as a dancer. This is not meant to replace your studio training but support it and help you grow. NCYTE currently represents 8 different studios throughout NC. We are always excited to connect with new studios and dancers.
On Saturdays, you will have company class and work on repertoire. NCYTE encourages self-disciplined and motivated dancers, as many times you will be learning from and working with each other. Our repertoire spans all styles of tap and percussive dance - there is always something to work on!
PERFORMANCE & TRAVEL: NCYTE travels to perform in communities thoughout NC and beyond. We bring programming to schools, retirement communities, arts centers, community events, and professional theatres. These are incredible opportunities to perform and share tap dance with new people.
This past season NCYTE has traveled to SC for a school tour in Charleston and performed at the Boston Tap Party, as well as performances throughout the Triangle area.
MENTORSHIP: NCYTE has a 40 year tradition of building strong, creative, compassionate leaders. Our alumni are dancers, choreographers, doctors, lawyers, teachers, social workers, engineers, musicians and magicians. Alumni are present in almost every field you can think of. Our alumni consistently credit NCYTE as a large part of their growth as individuals - not just tap dance. YES - you will grow as a dancer, but there is so much more that happens during your time in this organization that will stay with you throughout any phase of your life.
